At present-day Sidley Park, a country estate in Derbyshire, England, a pair of scholars sift through a haphazard trove of historical documents related to the estate's sprawling gardens and the possibility that Lord Byron once visited, killing a man in a duel. Meanwhile, in 1809, thirteen-year-old Sidley Park resident Thomasina Coverly has become preoccupied with a strange notion: that underneath the seeming randomness and chaos of the world lies a predictable, mathematical order. As the lines between past and present become increasingly blurred, the world of the play begins to kaleidoscopically mirror the nearly-lost discoveries of the world's first chaos theorist. By turns touching, funny, and thought-provoking, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia is a masterful exploration of the tension between, and reconciliation of, the Classical and the Romantic, the ordered and the disordered, the eventual and the never-quite-becoming.
