  The Firebird at Spreckels Theatre

The Firebird

Spreckels Theatre
121 Broadway San Diego

Every great artist has a breakthrough piece. For Igor Stravinsky, it was The Firebird, a 1910 ballet inspired by a series of beloved Russian fairy tales. Set to Stravinsky's captivating score, this classic ballet tells the story of Ivan, who finds himself lost in a dark, dangerous place filled with desperate characters, where a cruel boss rules by fear and intimidation. It is the beautiful, mythical Firebird who first charms and eludes Ivan -- and ultimately saves him. Featuring the work of resident choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich, City Ballet of San Diego presents their take on this masterwork as part of an eclectic program at Spreckels Theatre, which also features George Balanchine's Serenade, the San Diego premiere of Ash, and Samuel Barber Adagio, an award-winning pas de deux crafted by Wistrich in 1990. Musical accompaniment is by The City Ballet Orchestra with John Nettles conducting. There is also a free lecture by artistic director Steven Wistrich 30 minutes before each performance.
